Event Series Event Series: 3MT Workshops

This interactive workshop is designed to help graduate students prepare compelling submissions for Southern’s upcoming 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Participants will gain practical strategies for crafting a clear and engaging presentation of their research geared to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. This event is open to all graduate students– even those not preparing a 3MT submission.

Presenters: Rebecca Hedreen and Dr. Theresa Marchant-Shapiro

5:00-5:30 p.m. – Learn how to distill complex research into accessible language that resonates with a general audience.

5:30-6:15 p.m. – Explore techniques to turn your plain language summary into a polished, time-bound presentation.

6:15-6:30 p.m. –  If time allows, students will practice presenting to each other in a “speed dating” format for peer feedback

Follow-Up Session:
On Wednesday, November 19th,  Lisa Kuchta from the Department of Communications, Media, and Screen Studies will lead a session on best practices for presenting to a webcam and recording your submission.

Workshop Registration:

We encourage all interested graduate students to register for the upcoming 3 Minute Thesis® Preparation Workshops. While registration is not required, signing up will help us tailor the sessions to better support your goals and ensure you receive timely updates.

3MT Submission Deadline:

First-round recorded submissions are due on December 5th, 2025, so this workshop will give you ample time to refine your presentation.
