NOW HIRING: Graduate Research Assistant (Part-Time, 10 hours/week)
Project: Investigating the Use of Generative AI in Science Teacher Education Fall 2025 – Spring 2026
Position Overview: Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to support a new research study exploring the use of generative AI (genAI, e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) in science teacher education—an exciting and rapidly evolving area with significant implications for teaching and learning. This part-time assistantship (10 hours/week) will involve meaningful contributions across the research process, from literature review to data analysis to scholarly writing and dissemination.
The study involves two university science methods courses (elementary and secondary), where pre-service teachers are engaging with genAI tools in their coursework. The GRA will assist in analyzing data collected from these settings, support qualitative coding and reliability checks, and help identify themes and patterns in how genAI is being used and understood in teacher preparation contexts.
Responsibilities Include:
• Conducting an AI-supported literature review on genAI in education and teacher preparation
• Supporting qualitative data analysis (e.g., coding transcripts, student work products)
• Collaborating to refine coding frameworks and ensure coding reliability
• Contributing to the interpretation of findings
• Co-authoring a conference paper and assisting with presentation development
• Participating in regular research meetings with the faculty supervisor
Eligibility Requirements (per Graduate School policy):
• Fully admitted to the Graduate School and pursuing a master’s, sixth-year certificate, EdD, or post-master’s planned program
• Minimum 3.2 undergraduate GPA and 3.5 GPA for any completed graduate coursework
• Enrolled for at least 1.0 graduate credit in each semester of the assistantship
• Must not hold other university-supported positions (e.g., graduate teaching assistant, adjunct faculty, etc.) during the assistantship
• Must complete required forms, including the Student Acknowledgment of Terms and Conditions and HR onboarding documents
Who Should Apply: I welcome applicants from a range of academic and professional backgrounds. While a background in science and/or education is helpful, it is not required. Ideal candidates will have strong organizational and research skills, be able to complete assigned tasks independently and in a timely manner, engage collaboratively with the faculty mentor, and have a curiosity about the use of genAI in education.
Potential applicants might include:
• Current teachers pursuing an MS or EdD, particularly those interested in instructional technology or curriculum studies
• Future teachers in MAT programs exploring genAI’s role in their profession
• Graduate students in STEM or related fields with experience in research and a strong interest in teaching and learning
